How to Make Computer Music With VST Plugins and VSTi Instruments

Posted by No comments

By Greg K Hoffman
VST plugins are beginning to gather a lot more interest as music buffs/computer buffs put these two interests together. What was once thought impossible by many astute computer operators is now beginning to appear as not being all that difficult.

VST plugins in its simple terminology means Virtual Studio Technology by Steinberg. Imagine being able to have your very own virtual studio. The VST is actually the interface that allows the use of software consisting of action synthesizers and effects the plugins with audio editors and recording systems.

Software is the catalyst between the VST and the simulation of a traditional recording studio. If you wee to compare the VST plugins with the actual switches and knobs on the actual hardware you would see the similarities. It would then not appear quite so foreign to you if you are familiar with the hard version of the studio equipment. The VST plugins are hosted within a workstation that is a digital audio type.

If you think that there are only a few plugins to choose from, you are mistaken. You are going to be quite surprised to learn there are thousands of various types to choose from. I bet you are thinking about your pocket book right now, but the nice thing is there are may that are freeware, and of course, there are commercial ones available as well.

Being as VST is so popular it’s good to know that there are many audio applications that support them. If you are going to become involved in VST plugins then you will need a VST host. This is just simply a software or hardware application that permit’s the plugins to be loaded and controlled during use. If you shop around you will find some excellent VST host providers.

One of the many cost advantages of using plugins is the fact they really help to cut down your hard based equipment costs. Plus think of the space you can save, not having to store tons of equipment.

You can get some great VST plugins that are like a package deal. For example there is a package available that includes shuffling, panning, panoramas width along with comb filters and many other inclusions as well.

Its important for you to learn that plugins are not software that stand alone. They will usually come with DLL files. This stands for dynamic link library. As we mentioned you can find lots of free software on the internet. It is not difficult to use. You simply follow the instructions for the download. Many of these will walk you through the stages of how to get the best benefits from them.

If you are totally new to the creation of music with your computer then you may want to do some research before you start. It doesn’t mean that you have to do months of learning. In fact, if you start visiting some of the music blogs you will be intrigued at not only how easy it is, but what you can do and create with things like VST plugins.

Is the Best VST Software Replacing Creativity in the Studio?

Posted by No comments

In the past few decades, music recording has seen some of the most industry-changing leaps and bounds people could imagine. With sophisticated technology and affordability of computers, musicians can now record music in the comfort of their own homes using virtual studio technology software.

Some may argue, however, that even the best VST software can’t give musicians an organic recording experience. In fact, there are some critics who say VST software is replacing creativity with laziness, or originality with the mainstream.

Obviously, VST software is not going anywhere. It is a mainstay in the music industry. Musicians and producers all around the world rely on programs like this to do their work. But has this kind of technology enabled the untalented or lazy to create music that has no unique flavor or hard work behind it? After all, it’s fairly easy to buy a software program, lay down some loops, and then even doctor up your vocals with additional software if you can’t sing. Gone are the days where you actually have to learn to play the saxophone—simply click and drag some pre-recorded notes into your song. Want to add some bongo drums? No problem.

The best VST software programs are capable of highly intelligent things. Certainly there are plenty of artists who use these programs creatively. But perhaps it’s time to get back to the studio or enroll our children in piano lessons before we set them loose on software programs that do everything for them.

The Best VST Program Isn’t Hard to Learn

Posted by No comments

Digital music recording can be a rewarding process using Virtual Studio Technology (VST). What exactly is VST? Without getting too technical in the definition, the best VST is basically technology that will allow the simulation of instruments and vocals—with the ability to manipulate, mix, and create your own tracks and songs.

Sound complicated? While the technology itself is highly complex, using it can be pretty simple. The way VST simulates real instruments is via a process called sampling. For example, the sounds of a flute or harp are recorded to make samples and capture different nuances of the instrument. There are complete orchestras, solo instruments, and even vocals to dabble with. Everything is controlled by a MIDI controller. Most VST programs come on a CD or DVD that you simply pop in to your computer.

If you have a good VST program, you’ll actually feel as if you are playing the instrument or singing the vocals. Since these programs typically are affordable to anyone, you can buy a cheap one or spend a little extra to get the best VST. There are also special VST programs for mastering, which usually have a combination of filters and effects that will help you make a full mix.

If you do a little research, you can probably find one that fits your musical needs. Even the best VST program isn’t hard to learn—though it may cost more. With this type of musical software, the possibilities are virtually endless for creating amazing music.

The Best VST Software Doesn’t Change The Fact that I’m a Starving Musician

Posted by No comments

I’ve been a musician for as long as I can remember. As an artist, I know that deprivation and struggle can come with the territory. There have been times I’ve chosen to buy a new album over feeding myself lunch, and my house is full of expensive music equipment even when I’m struggling to pay rent. I also have invested in one of the best VST programs available, but I’m still not a rock star.

I think there’s a common misconception about recording software—people think it will make them instant musicians. While I don’t disagree that VST is a fun and useful tool for many musicians, I also think it’s making some of us a bit lazy. It’s not as simple as buying a software program, popping it into your computer, and suddenly laying down a perfect track. Musical greatness takes time, energy, resourcefulness, and a dedication to learning your craft. While some people may use a VST just for fun, I think others believe it will turn them into rock stars.

As a singer, songwriter, and guitar player I’ve spent countless hours practicing in the studio and using VST programs to enhance my work. However, even owning the best VST hasn’t made me famous—yet. My point is, VST programs are making it easy for anyone to create music, but true musical genius is marked by creativity, originality, and versatility. Sadly, owning a computer and being a skilled musician doesn’t mean your dreams of making a best-selling record will come true.

Best VST Host for Beginners

Posted by No comments

I’ve been playing the guitar and keyboards for a long time. While it took me a while to join the digital music movement, I’ve acquired some basic equipment over the years but want to add on to my “studio” that I have set up in my house. Basically, I’d like to set up my computer to use audio editing and recording software and try my hand at virtual instruments. After doing some research, I’ve learned a few things when it comes to finding the best VST host. If you’re a newbie like myself, here’s the advice I found:

  • Visit a music store that sells this kind of software and ask them to set up a customer demo. This way, you can watch the program in action and try out all the features. Using a program before you buy it is important—you want to make sure you know how to navigate it easily.
  • Browse around on different VST host websites. Some companies will actually offer a trial download. This way, you can see how it works on your own computer before you actually commit to buying it.
  • Consider buying a more simple program for a lower cost. If you’re a novice or you just want to work on simple projects at home, you probably don’t need to spend a fortune on a program with a bunch of bells and whistles you don’t need.
  • Many different resources pointed me to Cakewalk Sonar. Apparently they offer many different versions depending on your level of expertise and musical goals.

I hope this helps the beginner who is looking for the best VST host. My final tip? Use the tutorials. Oftentimes, a program will seem a whole lot easier once you’ve taken the time to go through the training. Good luck.

Becoming the Best VST User

Posted by No comments

As an aspiring musician, I’m always coming up ways to improve my craft. One of the biggest challenges for singers, songwriters, and performers is the financial struggle of “making it” as an artist. No matter how good you are, many musicians spend a lifetime trying to hit it big. A while ago, I decided to broaden my horizons and learn VST software. By becoming proficient at one of the best VST programs around, I’m confident that I’m giving myself more options for careers in the music industry.

Of course I’d like to be a rock star and tour the world performing my songs, but I’ve come to the realization that many of us typically end up behind the scenes. Learning VST is a powerful tool to help you understand the recording industry. You become savvy to all kinds of musical nuances, recording techniques, and the production end of things. As a musician, I feel that it has strengthened my work by allowing me to understand the  audio process in a better way.

With a VST program, you can experiment with all kinds of musical instrumental sounds, different vocals, and record your own songs. The best part, however, is being able to manipulate your work. I can create something and then completely change the structure of a track by shifting parts around or adding in a new loop.

While I’m hoping my music career pans out, I’m not opposed to becoming a producer or working as a recording technician or engineer. If I can become the best VST user I can be, I figure I’ll have a better shot at a good paycheck if my rock star plans don’t fall into place.

Trying to Find the Best VST Host

Posted by No comments

I’m an aspiring musician and songwriter. While you might think I have some sort of computer-based software program for my craft, I don’t. I currently have nowhere to store my creative genius because I’m trying to decide which is the best VST host and what software to actually buy.

When I research this topic on the Internet, the results are little confusing. How is someone like me to know which program is better than the next? Moreover, how am I supposed to understand all the technical jargon about DirectX plugins or XMP metadata support.

Say what? I had an easier timing learning a foreign language in high school!

Seriously, though, I’m kind of at a loss. Obviously I’ve heard of programs like Adobe Audition – mostly because I’m just familiar with Adobe as a company – but what about all the others? When I researched the best VST hosts, I found a list in Wikipedia that includes about 20 different companies/software programs. Where’s a guy to start? I suppose I could do some good old-fashioned homework and make a pros and cons list, but then again I’m not even sure I’d understand it. Is there a program called “Learn How to Make Awesome Music Really Easily?” Cause I’d totally buy it.

I realize I should probably know a little more about the whole virtual recording studio “world” before trying to jump into it by buying the best VST program, but I can’t help but feel this whole process should be a bit more consumer-friendly to the music novice.
